More Than Just a Pit Stop: Life Lessons from Cars 3

Cars3dvdcoverDue to the cold and damp weather, I have been needing some extra self care these days. Part of that self care has been me enjoying Disney+ watching Christmas movies and the Pixar movies. For my latest post in my series, “What I learned from ____________”, I watched Cars 3, an animated film about talking race cars. This movie might seem like an odd source for profound life lessons, but as someone navigating the twists and turns of living with chronic pain and disability, as well as the mental health issues caused by being in non-stop pain, I found this movie surprisingly relatable and even moving.

The Breakdown:

LightningCruz (1)Lightning McQueen, the star racer, faces a harsh reality: he's getting older, and newer, faster cars are taking over the track. A devastating crash forces him to confront his limitations and the possibility of life after racing. This resonated with me deeply. My life was literally ripped out from under me like a rug when I fell and broke my ankle, and again 11 months later, when a bus rear ended me, and it’s taken me a long time to find peace and find my way back from that. The mental and physical health issues caused by chronic pain and related trauma, can feel like you are going to crash, catastrophically derailing your life's course and forcing you to re-evaluate everything. Your life is turned upside-down in a matter of seconds, and you are left trying to navigate your new life, with your new mind, your new body.

There were many relatable moments watching this movie. Here are the key takeaways that have helped me steer through my own challenges:

Acceptance is the First Step: In Cars 3, Lightning McQueen's initial reaction to his declining abilities is denial and resistance. He struggles to accept that he's no longer the fastest car on the track. McQueen continually resists the idea of slowing down and struggles against his new reality. It's a familiar feeling. This mirrors the experience of many individuals facing a chronic illness or disability diagnosis. Denial and anger are often the first reactions to a life-altering diagnosis and it's natural to feel overwhelmed, angry, and resistant to the changes that such a diagnosis brings. But like McQueen, I learned that acknowledging my limitations is essential for moving forward. To be honest, I’m still learning that. My mind has all these great things it wants me to be doing despite my body not being able to and that is a very hard thing to accept.  McQueen learns the same thing, that acceptance is a crucial first step on the road to recovery and adaptation.

Storm-1For those dealing with mental health issues, this process of acceptance can be particularly challenging. Mental health conditions often carry stigma and misunderstanding, which can make it difficult to acknowledge and seek help. However, just as McQueen's denial hinders his progress, resisting a mental or physical health diagnosis can prevent individuals from accessing the support and treatment they need.

Also, acceptance doesn't mean giving up or resigning oneself to a life of limitations. Rather, it means acknowledging the reality of the situation and creating space for new possibilities. By accepting his limitations, McQueen opens himself up to new experiences, such as mentorship and coaching, which ultimately lead to personal growth and a redefined sense of purpose. Similarly, accepting a mental or physical health diagnosis can empower individuals to seek appropriate treatment, develop coping mechanisms, and build a fulfilling life despite their challenges. Remember, acceptance is not a sign of weakness but a sign of strength and a catalyst for positive change.

Mentorship Matters: In Cars 3, Lightning McQueen's journey takes a positive turn and he finds guidance when he meets Cruz Ramirez, a young and enthusiastic trainer who helps him adapt and discover new strengths. Initially Cruz seems like an unlikely mentor. However, Cruz's fresh perspective, unwavering belief in McQueen's potential, and innovative training techniques help him rediscover his passion for racing and develop new skills. In addition to supportive friends and family, support groups, online communities, and therapists can provide the encouragement and wisdom needed to navigate this new terrain and this highlights the profound impact that mentorship can have, especially during times of transition and uncertainty.

LightningCruzStormSimilarly, for individuals navigating mental and physical health challenges, seeking guidance from a mentor or therapist can be transformative. A mentor can offer a listening ear, provide valuable insights, and share coping strategies based on their own experiences. They can help individuals set realistic goals, challenge negative thought patterns, and develop the resilience needed to navigate difficult emotions.

Moreover, mentorship can foster a sense of connection and belonging, which is crucial for individuals who may feel isolated due to their mental and physical health struggles. A mentor can offer a safe space for open communication, reduce feelings of shame and stigma, and provide a sense of hope for the future. Whether it's a therapist, counsellor, support group leader, or a trusted friend or family member, having someone to guide and support you on your mental health journey can make all the difference.

Remember, seeking mentorship is not a sign of weakness but a proactive step towards self-improvement and well-being. Just as McQueen benefited from Cruz's guidance, individuals facing mental and physical health challenges can find strength, encouragement, and valuable insights through the support of a mentor.

Redefining Success: Winning isn't everything. McQueen realizes that his legacy extends beyond trophies and championships. Lightning McQueen's initial definition of success revolves around speed, victory, and the glory of being a champion. However, as he confronts his limitations, he begins to realize that success can be found in other forms. He shifts his focus from personal accolades to mentoring Cruz Ramirez, guiding her towards achieving her own dreams. He finds fulfilment in mentoring Cruz, helping her achieve her dreams. This transition signifies a powerful shift in perspective – a redefinition of success that emphasizes giving back, empowering others, and leaving a lasting legacy. Similarly, I've had to redefine what success means to me. It's no longer about pushing myself to the limit, but about finding joy in achievable goals and meaningful connections.

This concept of redefining success is particularly relevant for individuals navigating physical and mental health challenges. Societal expectations and personal ambitions can often create a narrow definition of success that focuses solely on external achievements. However, for those facing mental and physical health struggles, such expectations can be unrealistic and detrimental. It's crucial to recognize that success can be found in small victories, personal growth, and meaningful connections.

lightningRedefining success might involve setting smaller, achievable, more realistic goals, celebrating personal progress, and finding joy in everyday activities. It could mean prioritizing self-care, building strong relationships, and contributing to causes that bring meaning and purpose. By redefining success, individuals can cultivate a sense of accomplishment and self-worth that is not contingent on external validation or comparison to others. Remember, true success lies in living a life that is authentic, fulfilling, and aligned with your values, even in the face of challenges.

Adapting, Not Giving Up: McQueen's journey isn't about regaining his past glory; it's about embracing change and finding new ways to thrive within the sport he loves by finding a new way to participate. This mirrors my experience with chronic pain and disability. I've had to redefine my goals, adapt my activities, learn new skills, and find alternative ways to express myself with things that I can do, rather than focusing on the things I can no longer do. Lightning initially struggles to adapt to new training methods and technologies, but with perseverance and a willingness to learn, he discovers that he can still contribute to the racing world in meaningful ways. This resilience in the face of change is a powerful message for anyone navigating life's challenges, particularly those related to physical and mental health.

For individuals dealing with chronic pain, disability, or mental health issues, adapting to new limitations can be a daunting process. It often requires letting go of old routines, expectations, and identities. However, as McQueen demonstrates, adaptation is not about giving up; it's about finding new paths to fulfillment and purpose. This might involve exploring new hobbies, modifying activities, or seeking out assistive technologies. It's about focusing on what you can do, rather than dwelling on what you can't.

Moreover, adapting to health challenges often requires a shift in mindset. It's about embracing a growth mindset, viewing challenges as opportunities for learning, and personal development. It's about cultivating resilience, the ability to bounce back from setbacks and keep moving forward. Remember, adapting is not a sign of defeat but a testament to your strength and determination. Just as McQueen found new ways to participate in the sport he loved, you too can find new ways to engage with life, pursue your passions, and create a fulfilling future, even in the face of adversity.

CruzThe Importance of Perseverance: Lightning McQueen's journey towards acceptance, adaptation, and redefining success is not a smooth ride. He encounters numerous setbacks, moments of doubt, and a persistent fear of failure. However, what sets McQueen apart is his unwavering perseverance. He refuses to give up on his goals, even when faced with seemingly insurmountable challenges. This resilience is a crucial lesson for anyone navigating life's difficulties, particularly those dealing with chronic illness, disability, or mental health issues. This clicks with my brain, because I was blessed with a sense of resilience, and am so grateful for it. It’s what keeps me going despite extreme obstacles. It's what keeps me alive.

The road to recovery and adaptation is rarely linear. There will be good days and bad days, moments of progress and moments of regression. It's easy to become discouraged, to feel like giving up when faced with persistent pain, limitations, or emotional distress. However, as McQueen demonstrates, perseverance is key. It's about pushing through the tough times, maintaining hope, and continuing to strive towards your goals, even when progress seems slow or uncertain.

Perseverance doesn't mean ignoring your pain or pushing yourself beyond your limits. It's about finding a balance between self-care and self-challenge. It's about setting realistic goals, celebrating small victories, and recognizing that setbacks are a natural part of any journey. It's about cultivating a mindset of resilience, viewing challenges as opportunities for growth and learning. Remember, perseverance is not about brute force; it's about consistent effort, adaptability, and an unwavering belief in your own potential.

Just as McQueen's perseverance ultimately leads him to a fulfilling new chapter in his life, your own perseverance can help you navigate the challenges of chronic illness, disability, or mental health issues. I fulfilled a lifelong dream and became an artist, and last year I took up writing. By staying committed to your goals, seeking support when needed, and celebrating your progress along the way, you can create a life that is meaningful, joyful, and aligned with your values. Remember, the finish line may look different than you initially imagined, but with perseverance, you can reach it and discover new possibilities along the way.

Overall, while the movie's plot centres on physical challenges, the themes of resilience, adaptation, and redefining success are equally applicable to mental and physical health. McQueen's journey from denial to acceptance mirrors the process of coming to terms with a mental or physical health diagnosis. Just as McQueen finds strength in mentorship and support, seeking guidance from therapists, support groups, or trusted friends can be crucial for navigating physical and mental health challenges. The film emphasizes that setbacks are a natural part of any journey, reminding us that progress isn't always linear when dealing with physical or mental health. Ultimately, Cars 3 offers a powerful message of hope: with perseverance, self-acceptance, and a willingness to adapt, we can navigate life's challenges, whether physical or mental, and find new paths to fulfilment.
